On the subject of applications for iPods other than playing music (and cheating at school), Open Culture offers 10 Unexpected Uses of the iPod.
I wouldn’t say that all ten are “unexpected” but there are links to several great examples of how the devices can be used for teaching and learning.
My favorite is helping doctors identify sounds of the heart that may indicate problems.
