getting started with golive

starting a new site

One of the biggest adjustments some people have in using a site management program like GoLive is that they must think in terms of the whole site, not just a collection of pages. You can certainly start by creating a page but your web publishing life will be much happier if you start by creating a site structure and then build pages.

When you start a new site in GoLive, you have three choices: begin from scratch, import an existing site from a local hard drive or import an existing site from a web server. Your choice will depend, of course, on whether you have a site that you've built or inherited. Don't worry if the site was created using another program. GoLive will read the files and help you find any errors.

navigating the golive interface

The interface you see after installing GoLive is not the interface you have to live with.

Note that this screen shot is from GoLive in Mac OS X. If you're using Windows, you'll see the same elements with the familiar gray enclosure of most Windows programs in the background instead of the desktop.

This tutorial won't be going into details on the different pieces of the screen but in general here is what you have to work with:

The interface can be rearranged in many ways to fit the way you work and different workspaces can be saved to fit different projects. For more details about the interface, take at look at this GoLive Quick Reference (in pdf). To learn how to save your customized workspace layout, see this GoLive Tip.

Play around with the different elements of the interface and then click the link to continue.
