getting started with golive
the site window
With your site created and the site window open you're now ready to modify your pages and create new ones. But first let's take a look at the site window and see what resources GoLive offers for managing your site.

The site window has two parts. The left side shows the files inside your content folder (and other attributes such as the colors and external links used). In GoLive CS, this folder is located inside your project folder and is called web_content. In earlier versions it's usually named the same as your site.
The right side shows the Extras folder (also inside your project folder) which holds your Template documents and other elements you create to build your site. When you connect to your web server, you will see the files and folders listed in the right pane.
The tabs across the top of each side of the site window show you different sets of elements used in your site. This tutorial doesn't go into the details of those elements but feel free to explore.
using the site window
The most important thing I can say about the site window is that you should never, never, never, NEVER make any changes to your site anywhere outside of this window. GoLive keeps track of changes to your site and stores them in the site file. However, the program has no way of know about changes made at the desktop level or in other programs.
Here are some of the many edits you can make in the site window:
- You can import materials for building your site such as images, pdf files, video, audio and Flash files.
- Rename any file by clicking once on the name, waiting a second or so and clicking again. The name before the .extender will be highlighted and you can make the change. GoLive will then check all the files linked to that file and ask if you want to make the necessary changes to update the links.
- Create new folders by right-clicking anywhere in the white space, go to New in the contextual menu and choose Folder. Name the folder as you would any other file.
- Rearrange files by simply dragging them to a new location. When you do GoLive will ask if you want to update the links going to and from those files. You can elect to uncheck any of the files if you don't want those pages updated but I've never seen a reason to do that. Just click OK to have GoLive do all the work of updating the site for you.

There's much more to the power of GoLive's site management tools but this overview should get you started.
