importing a site from the hard drive in golive 6
before you start golive
1. Create a master folder for your site. On a Macintosh, this folder can go on the desktop or anywhere else on the hard drive. In some versions of Windows, the folder can also be put on the desktop and in some it must go in the My Documents folder or somewhere on the C: drive. In this example, the master folder is called happyvalley Folder.
2. Inside that folder, create a project folder to hold the "raw materials" for your web site - the original graphics files, Word documents from which you copied text, etc. In this example, it’s called happy valley raw materials. If you already have these files in another folder you can simply move it into the project folder.
3. Inside the project folder, place the folder containing your web site files. While the name of this folder could be anything, you will find it convenient to give it a short, web-safe name. In this example the folder is called happyvalley.
using the golive wizard
4. From the File menu, pull down to New Site this starts a wizard that will take you through the remaining steps.

5. For most people leave the button selecting Single User. The other choice applies if you have a team of people who will be working on this site. A team - wouldn't that be nice! :-) Click Next.

6. Click the button next to Import from Folder.

7. In the next wizard window, click the first Browse... button and find the folder containing all of your site files (the HTML pages, graphics, etc). In this example we have the folder inside the Happy Valley Folder and we called it happyvalley. In the Open dialog box, don't open the folder. Select it by clicking once and click the Choose button.
8. Most of the time GoLive will assume that a file called index.html (or index.htm) is the Home Page for your site and the path to that file will appear in the lower part of the wizard window. If the path does not appear, click the second Browse... button and use the navigation window to find your Home Page. Click Next.

9. The next wizard window is asking where you want to save the site project file and it's associated folder. You want this to be in the main folder (here called Happy Valley Folder) at the same level with the site files folder (called happyvalley) and the raw materials folder. Click Browse... to find and Open this folder. Before you click Save make sure you can see the site files and raw materials folder in the files list.
10. Click the Save button and then the Finish button. After a few seconds (more if you have a large number of files), GoLive will create a site window similar to the one below for your web site.

And there will be some new items in your project folder as well. In that folder you should see five items: the folder containing the web site files (happyvalley), a folder with the same name followed by .data, another folder with the same name.settings, a file with the same name.site and the folder you created to hold your raw materials. If the site window is currently open, you will also find a backup file which will go away when you close the file.
In Windows, you will not see the extensions unless you have chosen to have your computer show the file extensions. This means that you will have three folders that seem to have the same name. Don't worry about it. From now own you shouldn't be directly accessing these folders anyway.

11. From now on you will do NOTHING(!) directly with the files in the site folder (happyvalley) or the data folder (happyvalley.data) or the setting folder (happyvalley.settings). When you want to edit your site in any way start by double-clicking on the site file (happyvalley.site) to open the GoLive site window. All changes to the site, including adding and deleting files, will be done in that window.
