importing a site from an ftp server to golive 6

before you start golive

1. Create a master folder for your site. On a Macintosh, this folder can go on the desktop or anywhere else on the hard drive. In some versions of Windows, the folder can also be put on the desktop and in some it must go in the My Documents folder or somewhere on the C: drive. In this example, the master folder is called happyvalley Folder.

2. Inside that folder, create a project folder to hold the "raw materials" for your web site - the original graphics files, Word documents from which you copied text, etc. In this example, it’s called happy valley raw materials. If you already have these files in another folder you can simply move it into the project folder.

using the golive wizard

3. From the File menu, pull down to New Site this starts a wizard that will take you through the remaining steps.

5. For most people leave the button selecting Single User. The other choice applies if you have a team of people who will be working on this site. A team - wouldn't that be nice! :-) Click Next.

6. Click the button next to Import from Folder.

7. In the next wizard window, most people will leave the choice as FTP. If the following steps don't work, try HTTP. If neither work, check with your hosting service.

8. The next window is asking for the account information your hosting service should have given you. Enter the Server address, Username and Password information. Do not click the Save box unless this computer is secure.

9. Click on the folder at the right side of the Directory box. In the Select remote folder window find the folder in which this site will be placed. This will vary based on several factors but make sure the folder name is the last item in the path at the top of the window and then click OK.

10. Back in the wizard window click the Browse... button at the bottom and navigate to select the home page for your site. Click OK.

11. Make sure that the path in the Directory box and the path to the home page in the lower section are correct in the wizard window. Click Next.

12. In the next wizard window enter a name for the site. It's best if you use a short, simple, web-safe name. In this example, the name is happyvalley. Uncheck the box next to Create Project Folder. We already did that in step 1. Click Next.

13. In the next wizard window, click the Browse button and find the project folder you created in step 1. In this example we called it happyvalley folder. In the Open dialog box, don't open the folder. Select it by clicking once and click the Choose button.

14. Click the Finish button. GoLive will download your files and create a site window similar to the one below for your web site. How long this step takes will depend on the number and size of the files you have on the server.

When you open your site folder you will find more than just the files downloaded from the server. In that folder you should see five items: the folder containing the web site files (happyvalley), a folder with the same name followed by .data, another folder with the same name.settings, a file with the same name.site and the folder you created to hold your raw materials. If the site window is currently open, you will also find a backup file which will go away when you close the file.

In Windows, you will not see the extensions unless you have chosen to have your computer show the file extensions. This means that you will have three folders that seem to have the same name. Don't worry about it. From now own you shouldn't be directly accessing these folders anyway.

15. From now on you will do NOTHING(!) directly with the files in the site folder (happyvalley) or the data folder (happyvalley.data) or the setting folder (happyvalley.settings). When you want to edit your site in any way start by double-clicking on the site file (happyvalley.site) to open the GoLive site window. All changes to the site, including adding and deleting files, will be done in that window.
