QuickTime and QuickTime VR can be used for much more than web pages but the ability to easily send linear and QTVR movies across the web (even if slowly on dial-up connections) can really add a lot to a web site.

This is the official QuickTime page and is the place to get current versions of QuickTime and related Apple software. There are also links to sample movies and other resources.

Judy and Robert's Little QuickTime Page

By Judith Stern and Robert Lettieri, authors of the QuickTime Pro 6 book from Peachpit press. Site has lots of links to info and news but is rather chaotic.

A set of tutorials on how to edit QuickTime movies using QT Pro (a bargain at $30!)

QuickTime Tracks

Explains the different tracks that can go into a QuickTime movie, what kinds of media can be used and how the track can be edited. The most commonly used tracks and their tutorials are: Video and Audio Tracks, Text Tracks, Chapter Tracks, HREF Tracks (which adds interactive links to a movie).

QuickTime and Javascript

Provides several Javascript for specific purposes related to QuickTime including a script that detects whether the Quicktime plug-in is installed.

Creating a Slide Show

Step-by-step tutorial showing how to create a slide show from still pictures. Also see the follow-up tutorial on Adding Music to a Slide Show.

Interactivity

An overview of the interactive features that can be included in a QT movie. Interactive features include Flash Tracks (tracks which use Flash movies) and Sprite Tracks (animation using objects called Sprites).

QuickTime Streaming

An overview of QuickTime streaming technology which can only be used with a server that supports the technology. Other related tutorials include Preparing to Deliver Streaming Media (how to prepare a QT movie for streaming) and Hint Tracks (which are required for both streaming and Fast Start).

Fast Start vs. Streaming

Fast Start is the poor man's alternative to streaming which doesn't require a streaming server. It allows the movie to begin playing as soon as enough of it has been delivered to the player. The tutorial Fast Start (Progressive Download) explains how to prepare movies for Fast Start.

Apple's overview of QuickTimeVR technology and some suggestions about how to create a VR movie.

World Wide VR Panoramas

No tutorials here but this is the largest collections of QTVR panorama movies on the web. Locations include cities and landmarks from all over the world. In addition, look for the profiles of VR photographers.

DigitalPanos

The work of Charles Evans, a photographer who specializes in panoramic photography, this site features full screen panos (if you have the bandwidth).

QuickTimeVR Tutorials

Several tutorials covering the basics of creating panoramic and object movies. A PDF file of the materials is available for downloading. These tutorials were written in 1998 but they still do a good job of explaining the basics techniques and concepts.

The International QuickTime VR Association
