Anything But Fair and Balanced

ABC has given John Stossel, one of the most Fox-like “reporters” not actually working for Fox, an hour of network time tonight for something called “Stupid in America: How We Are Cheating Our Kids”. According to the listings, he’s supposed to explain “why most foreign students outperform American high school students”.

If you’ve ever seen any of Stossel’s other “reporting”, you pretty much know what to expect here (tabloid headlines, simplistic solutions). However, I’ll still put it on the DVR and watch tomorrow. Battlestar Galactica is on at the same time and we do have our priorities around here.

Yeah, my mom just talked to me about it. As a woman with the teaching credential in the 60’s who never used it beyond student teaching, she was very concerned after watching the show. She wanted to engage me in a discussion about school choice and charter schools. I told her that if I worked for a recently-opened charter school in my area, I’d be on the clock from 7am until 10pm (the school furnishes teachers with a cell phone they must answer until 10 at night), and my hourly rate would be something like 39 cents/hr. at this year-round school. Um, no. I have better self-esteem than that, even if the kids do perform better.
