Keeping a Digital Eye on Disaster

All of the major local stations around here have some kind of weather radar (Super Digital Doppler 10000 Deluxe!) and I’ve just spent the last hour or so flipping back and forth between them as they’re in continuous weather report mode. We have some major storms running through the area, the remnants of Ivan, and they’ve spawned as many as three tornadoes in this area west of DC. Normally this doppler stuff comes off as expensive high tech toys but in the case of really dangerous weather like this it’s fascinating how the weather people can track these storms minute by minute by the street and highway. From the looks of things they are going to be busy all night.
