It seems the state of Michigan is jumping on the laptop bandwagon by offering the portables to every 6th grader in the state. However, some school systems are hesitant about the program since it seems that the free computers are not free. Evidently the districts must pay $25 per student to participate in the program and will be responsible for maintenance. And, of course, the state is not paying for any teacher training. Without that component, a program like this is doomed to failure.
