As Stephen notes, there’s far too much being written about Kathy Sierra’s post to capture the whole business in one place.
However, in just a few words he gets right to the heart of the matter.
First, the real problem – I reiterate – is a society (and an A-list blogosphere) that has long tolerated such behaviour.
The problem is that it is still socially acceptable to demean women, still socially acceptable to casually propose violent acts, still socially acceptable to engage in character assassination, and still socially acceptable to attack certain minorities…
And all of that is not confined to the web. That’s only the echo chamber in which many of us spend a lot of time.
Just look around at other popular media. Turn on the cable “news” channels almost any time of the day. You’ll find plenty of examples of exactly what Stephen is talking about – and more.
Unfortunately, all this is reflective of the current American culture in general.
To quote the always wise Walt Kelly, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
