People just seem to love top whatever lists. And someone at the Boston Globe has added to the list of lists by compiling a list of the top 50 science fiction TV shows of all times.
These things are completely subjective, of course, and there are many legitimate ways this list could be organized. However, there are three reasons why this ranking has almost no credibility
They include many programs that aren’t even science fiction (Wild, Wild West, Man from UNCLE, Batman, Tales from the Crypt, etc.). Some of these shows included Sci Fi elements but they were far from great science fiction shows.
They left out Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Farscape. If you’re going to include the worst of Star Trek in the top 20 (Voyager), you better include two of the better attempts at science fiction on television.
They made the original Star Trek series number one. That tells me the writer was ranking the programs by influence, not quality.
I’m not a rabid science fiction fan (no storm trooper costume in the closet) but I do enjoy the best of what the genre has to offer. Whoever wrote this got everything they know from a book on the subject, not actually watching the shows.
We now return to more substantive rants and I apologize for wasting your time. :-)
