In these days of hyper-patriotism – where any criticism of government policy is seen as anti-American (or worse) – it takes real guts for a student to refuse to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

"The issue here isn’t why I won’t stand up," said Jaja, who wouldn’t say why. "The issue is that it is my right not to. I shouldn’t have to explain it."

She understands the Bill of Rights better than many of the "experts".
