The other night we journeyed into town to see The Producers at the Kennedy Center. Great show! Funny from start to finish! What I really appreciated, however, is just how politically incorrect Mel Brooks was able to be. The show is over the top in parodying and insulting just about every group and institution you can think of. The original movie has always been a personal favorite but considering when it was released in 1968 it’s possible that the themes and jokes couldn’t overcome the outrageousness of real life at that time. At it’s heart both the movie and the musical are farces that draw laughs from the absurdities of stereotypes. We need more of that.

Of course, I could just be over-analyzing. Maybe musical Nazis, Queer Eye taken to the extreme, and a chorus line of old ladies with walkers are just damn funny.
