If the news this morning that Disney has purchased Pixar is true, I feel very sorry for the creative types at Pixar. Walt Disney’s company stopped being creative many decades back and is now mostly in the business of recycling.
What sets Pixar apart from other animation studios (and especially Disney) was not just the amazing digital animation they create. More important is that story and character is always at the heart of every movie they make.
Notice that the producers never play up the “stars” who voice the characters in their movies. Who they are isn’t important. The voices are selected to perfectly compliment the character and the story. Those voices when combined with the great animation bring the characters to life.
Characters and story are things Disney forgot about long ago. Unfortunately, it probably won’t take the company long to squeeze all the character out of Pixar.
