Isabel is on her way and, as a result, my school system has closed (as has just about everything else in this area) giving us an unexpected day off. Most winters we have a few snow days which, while not totally unexpected, are still pleasant surprises. Today’s impromptu vacation doesn’t feel the same way. With snow we pretty much know what to expect – some amount of shoveling, slippery streets, slow travel. I’ve never been through the remnants of a hurricane before so it’s hard to know what we’ll be experiencing. Twice since I’ve lived in the Washington area we’ve had hurricanes headed for the area only to move slightly, giving us a day off with rather nice weather. From the looks of the sky, that ain’t gonna happen this time.
