Or maybe it’s that they’re making too much of it. Hundreds of artists recording the same twenty or so songs, trying (and usually failing) to find a new twist. And Maria Carey ad nauseam.
In days long past, this list would take the form of a mixtape. Collected and copied on actual recording tape. Later the songs were distributed on a CD. New medium, same idea.
As with everything else this year, the annual mix of holiday songs I can actually stand to have in heavy rotation is odder than normal. How else do you get Spinal Tap, Tom Lehrer, Queen, Jeff Goldblum, and The Beach Boys on one list?

Although, today is a somewhat odd date for a big beginning. It’s not the start of any meteorological season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, winter is just getting started. Hardly a reason to celebrate.
No religion I can think of holds January 1 as sacred. In fact, here in the US, starting the new year on September 1 would more closely align with a major religious event – the start of football season. All hail the NFL!
