Thanksgiving 2006

When I was a kid, you could count on every store being closed tight on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Easter. (Except for 7-11s, of course.)

Gradually, most started opening on New Years and eventually Easter.

Tomorrow, while most supermarkets in this area will be doing business (also on Christmas), all of the general merchandise stores will still remain shut.

CompUSA is advertising they will unlock their doors for a sale Thanksgiving night from 9pm to midnight.

Next year we’ll likely see others following their lead as everyone tries to get a jump on the madness known as Black Friday.

But why stop there? We should just give in and declare the entire final six weeks of the year a national shopping holiday.

We’ll close the schools, put all workers (other than at retail stores, of course) on half days so everyone has more time to spend at the mall.

It’s our patriotic duty to get out there and support the economy (and that of China, Taiwan, Indonesia, etc). BNL has already recorded a theme song for the effort.

Sorry. Just like the Christmas selling season, my holiday cynicism arrives earlier and earlier each year. :-)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
