Today is Columbus Day and, for some reason, schools are closed. I’ve never really understood why this was a holiday but I’m not about to refuse a day off.
I know, “Columbus sailed the ocean blue” but it’s the only federal holiday that celebrates a non-citizen (unless you count Christmas). Seems like a pretty un-American thing to do. :-)
The really unusual thing, however, is that in our overly-large school district, we “trade” today for Veteran’s Day in November, when the schools are open but just about everyone else in the area is off.
Just one more oddity to note about our little bureaucracy.
