Your Mission is to Upset Someone

Another must-watch video from the TED conference, in which Seth Godin explains why everyone should be out leading a tribe of some kind, a talk based on his excellent book, Tribes.

During the presentation he asks three questions of the viewer as part of his challenge to make change.

The first one is: who exactly, are you upsetting? ‘Cause if you not upsetting someone then you’re not changing the status quo.

The second question is: who are you connecting? Because for a lot of people, that’s what they’re in it for, the connections that are being made, one to the other.

The third one is: who are you leading? Because focusing on that part of it, not the mechanics of what you’re building, but the who and the leading part is where change comes.

Since the American education system is the very definition of status quo, we really need to do more with that first question and work harder to upset more people.

Ok, let’s see who I haven’t bothered in a while. :-)

There is a discussion going on at http://www.tinyurl.com/Op2LearnFB regarding Brown vs. Board of Education’s 55th Anniversary. How far have we really come in providing equity and quality in education for every child?

  2. A lot of students have bothered _me_ today. At least part of the problem is that they are not in charge of their own education. They don’t have much (or any) say in what they learn, how they learn, or what they create.

How do I, as a teacher, shake the status quo? Schools based on technology are expensive. You need students and parents to commit to a new idea about school, and that requires things to be very far down in the dumps already — without the parents and kids being hopeless about their future. These are not easy things to ask for.

A local school announced that it was laying off 25 people, including 18 teachers. I do wonder who will do the teaching, once all those folks are gone.

  3. I think that has been my life goal, but the environment I am in right now shows that I must be on my game. How many people though do we need to upset to start shaking he status quo at its foundation?
