The British government has launched a program to help millions of its citizens who “lack basic maths skills” in a critical area:
Winter sale bargains!!
Ministers want people who find it hard to work out “20% off” or “buy one, get the second half-price” offers to sign up for free refresher maths courses.
Staff from its Get On campaign will be out among the crowds at 10 city centres across England with tips.
The Department for Education and Skills says 14.9m people lack numeracy skills expected of an 11-year-old child.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a similar proportion of Americans were deficient in the same numeracy skills.
However, a better course of action might be to teach people to be more discriminating about the crap they buy in the first place.
There’s probably a good reason it’s on a sale rack after Christmas. :-)
