Our dear Secretary of Education just announced the appointment of a new board, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, whose job will be to advise her and her boss on how to improve math education.

Their specific mission will be to “examine and summarize the scientific evidence related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, with a specific focus on preparation for and success in learning algebra”.

So, who are the distinguished members of the panel? College Professor. University Dean. College Professor. Executive Director. Senior Fellow. Independent Researcher/Consultant.

Middle School Teacher??? How’d that happen?

In fact, he’s the only person on the seventeen-member panel who’s actually teaching math to real live teenagers. And his school is in a very upper middle class suburb not far up the road from here.

But considering who appointed this group, it shouldn’t be long before we get their recommendations for all kinds of new and wonderful testing schemes.
