Today is National Teacher Day. To mark the occasion the National Education Association has released its annual study of the top five teaching trends.

There are two findings that stand out among all the statistics. One is that less than a quarter of all teachers are men (and that number has been falling for four decades).

More significant, however, is that the number of all teachers leaving the profession is increasing as well. And the losses are not just due to the retirement of a lot of baby boomers either.

According to the NEA, almost half of all new teachers quit after five years, mostly due to pay and working conditions. The result is that almost four million new teachers will be needed within the next decade.

Good luck.
