If Mel Brooks can make a musical out of his movie The Producers (and soon from Young Frankenstein), why can’t Eric Idle do the same for the classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Evidently the production will open on Broadway next February under the unfortunate title of Spamalot and starring Tim Curry, Hank Azaria and David Hyde Pierce.
Brooks’ play has been such a roaring success because he kept all the outrageous political correctness of the original movie and turned it up a few notches. Considering how timid and homogenized most entertainment is these days, anything that over the top was bound to stand out. Eric Idle is behind the Python musical and the movie is great source materials, all of which offers some hope for a good show. Just find a new title.
