A few years ago the superintendent of our overly large school district issued a policy that we would only buy Windows-based computers. When it came to instructional technology, he was basically clueless but he liked to talk as if he knew something. His decree was actually orchestrated by the people running our information technology group, who were schooled by the Big Monopoly and know little else.

Last week I had to sit through a presentation by a couple of people from IT and one of their slides said an "enterprise"* goal was to have every computer in the district running a "secure and stable" operating system. Question: If you’re looking for security and stability, why the hell are you using Windows?

I have other questions for the IT folks but I’m going to stop before I get fired.

* Enterprise? I guess that’s business-speak for "school district". :-)
