No TV Viewer Left Behind

The date of reckoning has been set. This week Congress leapt into action and decreed that on February 17, 2009 all television stations in the US will stop sending out analog signals and broadcast only in digital format. Obviously, there’s nothing more important to worry about.

Actually, it’s about time they forced the move. However, why on earth should the federal government pay people to make the transition? The bill passed by Congress authorizes spending "up to $1.5 billion in federal funds to subsidize the set-top boxes for consumers". Obviously, there’s nothing more important on which to spend the money.

Gosh, Tim, aren’t there still poor folks in this nation who are using TV’s that don’t receive digital signals? They may still be pulling in their TV shows via rooftop antennae, even. And they may not be able to afford anything else. They’ll be totally cut off from TV reception when it’s digital only. Seems only fair to help them upgrade if the rug is being pulled out from under them.
