The Secretary is Full of It! (Part 2)

A while back I criticized Secretary of Education Rod Paige for some remarks he made implying that people working in public eduction were just waiting around to "collect the local and state stipend for each student". Well, Paige has just managed to top himself for utter stupidity. In remarks made to a meeting of state governors at the White House today, Paige referred to the National Education Association, the country’s largest teachers union, as a "terrorist organization". He later said that his comments were "a bad joke; it was an inappropriate choice of words", a rather large understatement.

I am no fan of the NEA (and not a member). They and their twin union the American Federation of Teachers (not a member either) are often among the biggest impediments to educational reform. But to use the phrase "terrorist organization" in this context goes beyond idiotic and heads straight for irresponsible. It’s becoming clearer all the time that W and his friends are intent on sticking that "terrorist" label on anyone and any group that disagrees with their policies, foreign and domestic.

  1. Thanks for posting on this! I was sorely tempted… good grief, I feel like if a Democrat made a comment like this about, say, the NRA, she or he would be run out of town! Unions are not perfect, but that kind of comment is so irresponsible.

  2. Next thing you know, he’ll be labeling unionized teachers ‘enemy combatants’

  3. Tim

It’s very reflective of the “you’re with us or against us” mentality that’s being taken on every issue by this administration. When they start equating an honest disagreement over policies with blowing things up, it’s gone way too far.
