Jeff Brown, who wrote a series of children’s books featuring a character called Flat Stanley, died earlier this week. Beyond the many books, millions of elementary teachers and their students also know the character from the ongoing Flat Stanley Project, which for many years has fostered communication between classes all over the world.

When I moved into my first technology training job, one of my initial tasks was to help some of the teachers learn to use email as part of their Flat Stanley Project. It was a lot of fun to watch the kids trading messages, and their drawings of Stanley, with kids in other states and countries. Hopefully the projects will continue long into the future, even if the stories will not.
